I believe that drama is a lifestyle and that every part of me is affected by my love of performance. The performing arts have taught me to be more aware of my surroundings and the people who surround me. I have learned that creative individuals have different strengths and weaknesses and have come to realize that such diversity is an invaluable asset.
“Performing is about developing empathy, which leads us to a broader view of the world and encourages us to develop compassion; so we can comfort each other and not be so brutal with each other.” Willem Defoe
My ambition is to be a big-screen actor; to achieve this, I believe that I need to be disciplined, focused, and both mentally and physically healthy.
Throughout my time at University, I have learned so much. I have been introduced to new disciplines that have intrigued me and captured my imagination and have been fortunate enough to work with and meet fantastic people.
The following is my story so far.
My name is Emily Huxley, and I am 20 years of age. I live in Liverpool and attend LJMU, but I was born in Jersey, Channel Islands, and lived in Monaco from the age of 8 until I left for University at 18.
I was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 10. Upon learning this, it became clear to me why I was not too fond of reading and, in particular, reading aloud. Once I knew that there was an explanation for my discomfort around reading and writing, I was able to learn the skills needed to cope with my condition. I was then happy to commit to drama lessons, which I had been very interested in for some time but shied away from in fear of reading scripts.
I have subsequently learned that many of the actors I respect and draw inspiration from, also have dyslexia. Such knowledge encourages me that with hard work and focus, I can achieve my goals. I went on to complete several LAMDA courses, including the PCertLAM, achieving mainly distinctions.
I speak French fluently and dabble in Italian. In Monaco, there was not an amateur drama scene, and my school performances focused mainly on musical theatre rather than pure drama. My experience of hands-on performances was, therefore, limited before I went to LJMU. However, since being at LJMU, I have been involved in several different productions, my biggest one being Medea in first year, and have got to devises many other productions in various theatre genres such as movement, immersive and improv.
